In early 2021 The Guardian published an investigation into the fate of some of the many migrant workers that were recruited mainly from the Indian sub-continent to help with the construction of the stadia and other infrastructure. The results were shocking in that the estimate of deaths was put at just over 6,500 since work started in 2011. That works out at an almost unbelievable 650 a year or 12 a week so just the logistics of repatriating the bodies must have been a sizeable operation. At the moment, with a week to go until the tournament starts, nearly all the media coverage is centred on how visiting LGBTQ fans will be treated which IMO seems trivial compared to the human cost levied on the many migrant workers …..

NB – it should be noted that although the Guardian has a good reputation for it’s journalism the figures above are disputer by the Qatari government.
